An Open Letter To Notre Dame's President

Father Jenkins,
It saddens me and frustrates me that you would think it appropriate to invite President Obama to speak at the commencement and award him an Honorary Degree. One of the basic tenets of Catholicism, indeed the very thing that separates Catholics from so many other religions, is that we respect life. To us, abortion is murder. President Obama and his wife Michelle, have worked tirelessly to federally fund abortions and embryonic stem cell research, which is totally antithetical to the teachings of the Catholic Church.  Moreover, out of all the countless invitations he has likely received to speak at commencements this year, do you think it is an accident that he chose Notre Dame? It is no accident.  It is a shrewd political move for him to say yes to the most renowned Catholic university in the country, as if his policies on abortion are now accepted, even by Notre Dame.  How could you sell us out as Catholics Father Jenkins? How could you do this to us when we are fighting every day against a society that is losing its morals?  I am ashamed to say that Notre Dame is no longer the number one representative of Catholicism in this country. Let's hope that Boston College won't fall victim to cheap political tricks like you have.

The Problem With Colin Powell

I've always admired Colin Powell.  His calm demeanor and steady resolve personifies strength and conviction.  His service to the country has been outstanding and Americans should be grateful for his leadership. Recently I saw an excerpt of Fareed Zacharia's interview with Powell and he asked him where the Republican Party went wrong.  Powell chided the party for drifting too far to the right, not paying enough attention to the issues of minorities, screaming too much, and placing too much emphasis on "small town values," while assuming that citizens in big cities didn't have values.  He blamed Sarah Palin for a lot of this.  Apparently these were the reasons that Powell endorsed Barack Obama.

I'm not buying it for one second.  First of all, John McCain was the Republican nominee.  I don't know of anyone who thinks McCain is too far right.  No one in Congress has done more to reach across the aisle than McCain.  Furthermore, many conservatives felt that McCain was too centrist, yet Republicans nominated him as their choice to represent the party. McCain did everything he could to reach out to minorities and to citizens of all geographic locations.  But there was no stopping Barack Obama's machine.  The massive amounts of money he raised allowed him to buy unprecedented advertising in swing states, the media's bias prevented them from vetting Obama the way they would any conservative candidate, and the economic meltdown right before the election doomed McCain's chances.  Prior to the economic crash, McCain was ahead in the polls in spite of Obama's machine.

What Colin Powell fails to understand about us conservatives is that when you have the media so against us, we get vigilant in our principles.  We do want to scream, and we get mad as hell, because it is so unfair and un-American to have a biased press.  Barack Obama's record in Illinois was far more left wing than John McCain's record was right wing. McCain refused to attack Obama for his past associations with Reverend Wright, even though many of us thought it was a legitimate issue.  Obama promised a $1000 check for 95% of Americans and that's all a lot of voters heard.  It's ridiculous.  It's like a middle school election:  Vote for me and I'll extend lunch hour by an hour.  So when Colin Powell says he supported Obama because the Republican Party drifted too far to the right, and didn't address the needs of all of the people, I just think he's being disingenuous.  I can't read his mind,  but his public comments regarding the party have  been an insult to most Republicans who are not prejudiced, who do care about the middle class, and want to see all of our citizens succeed.  We just don't agree with the Democratic Party's principles.  Apparently, Colin Powell does.

I Used To Be A Democrat

When I was a little girl, I was a Democrat.  Then I grew up.  Somewhere around the age of 46 a light bulb went off in my head.  It was like the commercial where the woman slaps the guy's head because he could've had a V-8.  What was I thinking all those years?  I guess I was thinking like my parents, life long Democrats.  My friends and professors were all Democrats.  And Hollywood, so influential to me in my early years, was convincingly liberal in my eyes. I used to think that good people were liberals, and bad people were conservatives.

Then something happened that changed my world view in an instant.  My youngest son, a brilliant and hard working student, with phenomenal grades, test scores, and accomplishments couldn't get into an Ivy League school.  I couldn't understand.  Until one day, a friend said to me, "Get over it. He's not a minority, he didn't grow up in the back seat of a station wagon, or have to overcome a stint in juvenile prison.  Haven't you ever heard of  affirmative action?"

That's when I realized that non-discrimination, everyone being judged by the content of their character and not the color of their skin, and equality, was all a myth.  I guess it had never occurred to me that the principle of equality would be sacrificed in order to give others a leg up, even if their qualifications were not as good as my son's.  I never wanted my son to be treated better than an equally qualified minority, I just wanted him to be treated equally.  Goes to show how starry eyed I was.  This one incident forced me to question all of my past assumptions.  The more I read, the more I got involved in the issues, platforms, and the tenets of the Democratic party, I realized I wasn't a Democrat!  Their entire premise in so many areas seemed to be that if you did well, followed the rules, practiced good judgement, accomplished great things, you were penalized.  But if you were a slacker, got into trouble, came from a broken family, couldn't get a job, you were rewarded.  Government handouts, tax breaks, or no taxes at all were your reward for not taking responsibility.
A conservative was born at 46 years old.  And I've never looked back.

The current presidential election  has brought many of the issues that concern me to the forefront.  Never before has the Democratic party been so clear on the direction they want to take our country.  The good thing about Obama's candidacy is that many of the issues are now out in the open.  A clear thinking voter knows what kind of country Obama wants.  Redistribution of wealth, unfettered abortion rights, entitlements, universal health care, radical judges, high taxes, appeasement to those who hate us, a dismantling of the military and our defense systems, and a more radical education system.  Never mind that he accomplished nothing in the Illinois Senate.  Never mind that he never had a real job in his life.  Never mind that he voted 'Present' over and over, instead of making decisions. He wants change like we've never seen change before.

Our country is about to be hijacked, and I hope and pray that Obama can be defeated.  The silent majority still exists, doesn't it?  I hope so.
